WEST VIRGINIA (Hinton News) – The yearly statewide tornado drill is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, at 11 a.m. Local sirens may be engaged during the test, mobile phones may receive a push notification, and other alerts may take place. It is important to note that not all areas will engage sirens, and not all citizens will receive alerts. NOAA Weather Radios will engage during the drill.
The goal of this yearly drill is to allow West Virginia residents the opportunity to practice what they would do in the event of an actual tornado. It takes place during Severe Weather Awareness Week each spring.
If a tornado does occur, the National Weather Service advises seeking shelter immediately. Avoid rooms with windows if at all possible. For added protection, the Centers for Disease Control recommends covering yourself with a blanket, sleeping bag or mattress. If you have a basement or other secure area, it is also recommended to have a kit with basic first-aid supplies, water and non-perishable food items.
The National Weather Service, one of the sponsors for the drill, encourages anyone who participates in the drill to post to social media with the hashtag #ReadyWVwx.
