In a time and place when divisiveness has run amok, essayist, executive and critic-at-large Art Callaham focuses on the one thing that still unites us all: our citizenship. In his new book “On America,” Callaham reflects on the common values and shared experiences of those who have loved, laughed, cried and served in the land we call home.
In 46 vignettes arranged in sections devoted to family, friends, war and peace, and country, Callaham shares views developed over a lifetime of work and service to his country, state, town and community. The vignettes are thought-provoking and sure to encourage lively discussion. There are political pieces, environmental pieces, pieces on taxes, and, yes, even a little sex.
Growing up in a small, West Virginia community, playing sports, fighting in Vietnam and going on to rise in the corporate world, Callaham has witnessed America first-hand from multiple perspectives. He boils these experiences down to their essence in entertaining and common-sense essays that reaffirm our roles as citizens of the greatest land on earth.
Agree with him or not, Callaham’s greater goal is to encourage readers to keep an open mind and to think, as he challenges us to meet at our common intersection, as Americans.
The book is intended to engender discussion, among family, friends and has been called “the perfect book club read” by early readers.
