Wade Hunter was Knighted by State Superintendent of Schools, Clayton Burch, into the Golden Horseshoe Society in Charleston on June 14. The Golden Horseshoe became a symbol of scholastic achievement to honor students who excel in the study of West Virginia history. The Golden Horseshoe test has been administered in West Virginia each year since 1931 and is the longest-running program of its kind in any state. The top-scoring students in each county receive the prestigious award and are inducted as “Knights” or “Ladies” of the Golden Horseshoe Society.
Wade is the fourth member of the Hunter family to receive this award. The other members are his brother, Luke, winner in 2020, Wade, this year’s winner, his cousin, Jacob, winner in 2010, and his father, James, the winner from Summers County in 1987. Wade and Luke are the sons of James and Tanya Hunter of Keenan and Jacob is the son of Mark and Cheryl Hunter of Hollywood. Jacob, Luke and Wade are the grandsons of Tommy and Martha Hunter of Hollywood, Monroe County, formerly of Hinton. Luke and Wade are also the grandsons of Kathy Harvey and the late Jim Harvey, of Talcott.
