Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers team will compete at the National Concrete Canoe Competition taking place June 3 – 5 at Louisiana Tech University.
Fairmont State remains the only institution in the State of West Virginia to ever qualify for the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition. In addition, the University holds the overall record for the most consecutive national appearances in the competition.
“The Fairmont State University Civil Engineering Technology students are very proud to represent both the State of West Virginia as well as the Virginias Conference at the National Concrete Canoe Competition,” said ASCE Faculty Advisor and Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Technology, Tabitha Laffere.
The Fairmont State ASCE Concrete Canoe team roster includes:

“This team has accomplished a great deal this year. After a two-year hiatus, they have picked up the paddles and hit the water with them. In true Fairmont State fashion, they have delivered a superior product that adheres to all competition specifications,” Lafferre said.
The team has dedicated this year’s canoe, “Colonel,” to former Fairmont State Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Technology, the late Gary Zickefoose. As a passionate educator for 36 years, he held his students to a high standard and sculpted them into exceptional engineers. Zickefoose founded the ASCE Concrete Canoe team and served as the first faculty advisor.
“Professor Zickefoose was a key member in the past of the Fairmont State University ASCE Student Chapter and the team wants to forever remember the positive impacts he made,” Lafferre concluded.
