Meet your candidate: Megan Harvey

Megan (Mann) Harvey is a 2022 candidate for the Summers County Board of Education. She is the VP of HR & Staff Development for both PracticeLink and MountainPlex Properties, based in Hinton. Megan is a graduate of Summers County High School and earned a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from Concord University.

With nearly 17 years experience in human resource management and employee relations, Megan is skilled in leadership, team building, and strategic planning. Her supervisor and colleagues characterize her as a conscientious individual who is careful and deliberate in her decision-making. She leverages best practices to make decisions that serve organizations now and into the future and anticipates how a decision made in one area is likely to affect other areas or have long-range implications. Megan is a strong team player who readily accommodates herself to the needs and interests of others. She has an innate motivational drive to be effective in both structured and unstructured settings.

Prior to working as an HR professional, Megan worked on a social marketing grant program for WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) designed to increase breastfeeding rates in southern West Virginia. As a result of her relationship and teambuilding efforts, she was able to recruit 75 key community partners across nine counties in southern WV and worked with local hospitals to permit WIC Peer Counselors in to visit and coach new moms.

As a parent and hiring manager in Summers County, Megan understands the need for and importance of quality education to prepare students for success after graduation, whether in college or as a skilled member of the workforce. She has served on the advisory board for SCHS WV GearUp program, Vice President of Talcott Elementary PTO, Local School Improvement Council, and currently serves on the PRICE Committee and Region I Workforce WV Board. While working with the Talcott Elementary PTO, she helped to raise approximately $40,000 towards field trips, in-class activities, and student achievement reward programs.

Megan is the daughter of Frank and Mary Mann, both retired healthcare professionals. She is the granddaughter of the late John and Janie Mann, and Basil Fitzpatrick and Iva Bennett. Both of her grandmothers worked and retired as teachers in Summers County and are at the heart of her love of education. As an ESEA Director for Summers County Schools, Mrs. Janie Mann acquired the funding to launch the former Summers County LPN program in the late 1960s. Megan is married to Tony (TJ) Harvey, Jr of 18 years, who works for CSX transportation. He is the son of Tony and Alice Harvey, former owners of Harvey’s Produce. Megan and TJ have one son, William, who is 10 years old.

If elected to the board of education, Megan will work to reinforce and implement policies and programs that foster positive relationships with students, staff, and the community; promote programs in the school system to help students succeed in education and training beyond high school; and collaborate with key stakeholders to create and maintain sustainable, long-term plans for programs and buildings. Megan sincerely asks for your vote and being committed to kids first.
