Wanda “June” McGraw

MCGRAW

Wanda “June” McGraw passed into eternity on January 11th, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Oliver Jackson Gunter and Zepha Irene Sanders Gunter of Beckley, WV.

The owner of June’s Beauty Salon and Hinton Realty, June was an active member of the Hinton business community for over 50 years. She also served on the Solid Waste Authority and supported the Humane Society of Summers County.

Her friends and family always said that June had the most energy of anyone they knew.

June started her first business during an era when most women married young and worked as homemakers. She broke the mold, became a successful small business owner, and paved the way, by her example, for others who came after her.

June retired in 2006 and moved to South Carolina with her longtime partner, Dr. Tom Dawson.

She was always physically fit. June and Tom were runners, and both have several trophies from races they ran during their many happy years together.

June spent the final years of her life in the loving and attentive care of the staff at Inlet Oaks Assisted Living in Murrells Inlet, SC, where she enjoyed many happy holidays, birthdays, and meals with her family, and especially enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her daughter.

June is survived by her daughter, Mona Lyn McGraw and son-in-law, Jeff Stuncard of Pittsburgh; her protective big sister, former roommate, and faithful helper, Beatrice Jacobson of Murrells Inlet, SC; her brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Darcy Gunter of Nokomis, FL; her brother, Dale Gunter of Beaver, WV; and a very special sister-in-law, Ruby McGraw of Southfield, MI.

She is also survived by her loving companion of the past 27 years, Dr. Tom Dawson of Myrtle Beach; special nieces, Dr. Susan Jacobson, Pat Koslowski, Jane Linkenhoker, Trudie Cloyd, Debbie Detherage, Beverly McGraw, and Jamie Hutterman; special nephews include Mike Gunter and his wife, Emer, Derrell SayKally Jr., Dr. Sam Lippert, Jeff Lippert, Jack McGraw, Stewart McGraw, Johnny McGraw, Dr. Matt McGraw, Mike Bailey, Rocky Wickline, Danny McRenolds, and Terri Hinkle.

Her sister-in-law, Ruby McGraw, and two nieces, Trudie Cloyd and Debbie Detherage, all visited her frequently, sent her cards, and never forgot her in her final years.

June also leaves behind a very special friend that she always thought of as her second daughter, Jennifer Willey of Niceville FL (formerly of Hinton), who called her frequently and never forgot her in her final years.

Lynnette Goss, June’s best friend of more than 20 years in Myrtle Beach, loved her, visited her frequently, and was always willing to help out in a pinch.

Special friends and former employees, Mike Atkins and Wilma Rodes of Hinton, who always remembered to send cards, called, and visited her in Myrtle Beach, and have continued the tradition of the annual June’s Beauty Salon Christmas dinner at the Char, in her honor.

The most loyal private caregiver/family friend in the world, Ellen Reilly of Myrtle Beach, who, along with her sister, Bea, was faithfully by June’s side in her last hours, as she always promised that she would be.

Two very special grand dogs, Keylo McGraw-Stuncard and Maximillion Stuncard, who used their doggie magic to make her later years more enjoyable. Keylo loved to sleep in his grannie’s chair, wedged beside her, and would growl if anyone tried to move him.

June was preceded in death by her good friend and former husband of 35 years, Bill McGraw of Hinton; siblings, Donald Jackson who died as a child, Mona Ruth Sakally of Venice, FL, Thelma and Alfred Plotkin of Venice, FL, Nyla Jean and Eugene Hinkle of Beckley, WV, Burton and Martha Gunter of Beaver, WV, Larry Gunter of Cincinnati, OH; nephew, Ricky Bailey of Mechanicsville, VA; a very special friend/nephew, Jimmy Grimmet of Jacksonville NC; as well as pets, Holly, Biche, Samson, Delilah, Frosty, Ming, Mimi, Priscilla, Benji; her grand birds Paco and Molly; and many more, too numerous to mention.

June will be interred near Hinton at Restwood Memorial Gardens, with her four most recent pets, who preceded her in death: Holly, Stormy (Bich), Samson, and Delilah. There will be a graveside ceremony officiated by Rev. Robbie Merritt at 1 p.m. Friday, February 4th, 2022. Contact Pivont Funeral Home for details, if you would like to attend.

There will be a Celebration of Life party for June at Inlet Oaks Assisted Living in Murrells Inlet, SC on April 7th, 2022. Anyone interested in attending, please call Mona at (724) 984-4129 for further details.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the June McGraw Memorial Fund at the Summers County Humane Society. Please donate here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KWG5QBHCKGNP2.

The June McGraw Memorial Fund will be a donation vehicle for many years to come, in fulfillment of June’s wishes to help as many animals as possible, while giving back to the community where she spent the happiest days of her life.
