The community of Summers County has been rocked by the announcement of the passing of Hinton native, Donald Frederick (Freddie) Mock Jr. who passed away on March 11. Mock was residing in Rome Ga. at the time of his death.
Summers County feels the loss greatly as Freddie Mock was an integral part of the community for many years. He worked at a local bank for an extended period of time, coached youth sports and officiated local games. Mock was also a long-time member of the Hinton Elks Lodge #821. According to his obituary, he also loved spending time at Willowwood Country Club.
Hinton Mayor Jack Scott said, “The entire Scott Family is saddened by the loss of our friend Freddie Mock. We loved Freddie as so many in our community did. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
Mock was born in Hinton in 1952 where he would go on to graduate from Hinton High School in 1970. During his time in high school, Mock played multiple sports including baseball, basketball and football. He was a member of the 1968 AA state football championship team. In 1974, he graduated from Concord College with a BS. He was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. During his time at Concord, Mock played both baseball and football. At the same time, he was also an amateur boxer.
Later in life, Mock’s passion for the world of athletics took him down the path of coaching and officiating games. He coached multiple youth sports teams in Summers County including midget league football, Little League Baseball and elementary basketball. In addition, he also acted as assistant coach to the Summers County High School football team in the late 1990s. All throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Mock also trained local amateur boxers in the area.
Freddie Mock is survived by his wife, daughter, son, three granddaughters, two sisters, two step-daughters, five step-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved canine companion, Fancy.
The family has asked that, instead of flowers, contributions be made to either Beech Run Baptist Church or Hinton Area Foundation.
