Buildings that become eyesores and safety hazards, and are allowed to deteriorate into decay, disrepair and neglect, have been brought up for another round of discussion at this week’s Hinton City Council meeting.
City manager Cris Meadows said he has introduced a new ordinance dealing with dilapidated buildings which will be discussed at the next city council meeting.
“There’s a list of 10-12 buildings that need to be torn down or fixed up,” Meadows said. “Mostly they need to be torn down. The city doesn’t own the buildings. We’re still trying to get responses from the property owners”
Anna Ziegler, the city attorney, said we are just beginning the discussion of the new ordinance.
“We are hopeful these property owners will comply to bring the property to proper standards. Twenty-five to thirty structures have been identified, and letters are going out to the property owners. Most of the structures will require demolition,” Zieglar said.
Among the goals of the new ordinance is mirroring provisions of the state code.
