Charleston, W.Va. (The Hinton News) — Logan County Schools has received the findings and sanctions issued by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) following its investigation into the Chapmanville Regional High School (CRHS) boys’ basketball program.

According to the decisions issued by the WVSSAC, Chapmanville Regional High School’s athletic program has been placed on probation for two years, and the boys’ basketball program has been placed on probation for three years. During the applicable probationary periods, certain athletic transfers will be subject to WVSSAC review and approval. The boys’ basketball program is also subject to restrictions on flex days for the next three years, and CRHS coaches are subject to additional WVSSAC rules and regulations training requirements.

The WVSSAC also imposed sanctions involving members of the boys’ basketball coaching staff. One assistant coach received a 365-day coaching suspension. The WVSSAC also imposed a suspension upon the head coach. That decision has been subject to appeal, and Logan County Schools understands that further review is being pursued through the WVSSAC appeal process.

The WVSSAC proceedings are separate from the school district’s consideration of any employment, personnel, administrative, or programmatic matters arising from these circumstances. Logan County Schools has not completed that process or reached final determinations regarding any potential personnel action or other measures that may be appropriate. The school district will continue to evaluate the information available to it and determine whether any additional steps are necessary to ensure appropriate oversight, accountability, and compliance within its athletic programs. Because that process remains ongoing, the school district will not comment at this time regarding potential employment or disciplinary action involving any individual employee.

Logan County Schools understands the concern this matter has caused for our students, families, staff, and the Chapmanville community. Our priority remains supporting our student-athletes and ensuring that our athletic programs operate with fairness, integrity, accountability, and compliance with applicable rules. We appreciate the patience of our community as these processes continue.
