INSTITUTE, WV (The Hinton News) – Senator Jim Justice visited West Virginia State University to meet with students and deliver remarks on the HBCU Arts Act.

“Let me tell you something: You don’t have to convince me that the arts matter. I’ve been fighting for our arts, culture, and history since the early days of my term as Governor. West Virginia has always told its story through its people, its music, its art, and its culture. That’s part of what makes this place so special. And right here at West Virginia State, you have students who will carry that story forward,” said Senator Jim Justice.

“We are honored to welcome U.S. Senator Jim Justice to West Virginia State University. Senator Justice has been a strong supporter of our university and of the transformative role that Historically Black Colleges and Universities play in strengthening communities and expanding opportunity across West Virginia and the nation. Arts and culture are central to West Virginia State University’s identity and to our proud heritage as an 1890 land-grant university. We appreciate Sen. Justice’s sponsorship of the HBCU Arts Act, which represents an important investment in the future of arts education at institutions like WVSU,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage.

BACKGROUND:

  • Senator Justice introduced the HBCU Arts Act with Senator Alsobrooks this May.
  • The HBCU Arts Act would increase investments in HBCU arts education by amending Section 323 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to include provisions supporting arts programs at HBCUs.
