HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – I am going to mix this week’s issue up a bit and ask for your help. This will, unfortunately, be relatively short as I do not know much about this particular piece. I told about the history of the Summers County Courthouse a while back in one of my previous pieces. But I recently found this old photograph of the courthouse buried in my collection that I acquired years ago.
I am asking for your help because it is an unidentified gathering at the courthouse. It is unmarked, undated, and no one is identified so I have no idea what this large gathering of people was about. A good 75% of the crowd are ladies, seemingly all young to middle-aged.
So was this a women’s church group, one of the various clubs in the county, just a social gathering that posed for their photograph outside of the courthouse, or what was the basis of this crowd of people? If you know any details of this particular photograp,h please email me at greenbrierantiques@gmail.com. I will add the title to the back of the photo.
I am trying to archive and identify my collection for future generations. It is a great 1910s or 1920s photo of the Summers County Courthouse, but it would mean so much more in a preservation aspect to have it identified. I love it when I uncover old photographs where not just the names of the people but the place, date, and event are all labeled. It is a win-win for a history nerd like myself. Ha
