TALCOTT W.Va. (Hinton News) – With the holiday season upon us, I did not have a lot of free time to dig through my collection to find a piece to do an in-depth story on. While skimming through my old photos of Talcott Album I stumbled across this late 1950s photo of the Talcott High School Varsity Cheerleaders.
I have always just loved this photo. The way they are dressed and carry themselves in this photo, it reminds me of a vintage Christmas movie. I originally found this photo in roughly 2014 on Talcott WV: A History in Photographs Facebook page. The page is managed by Tamara Nelson and Jim Monroe.
I owe this site to how I uncovered the 1907 Talcott Bank and Gratuity Bank stamp I wrote about in my first story. I had seen it again in 2014 and just happened to remember it after my stroke. I messaged an admin and Tamara Nelson messaged me back, put me in touch with Jim Monroe and the rest is history.
Tamara provided me with the ladies’ names in this photo. The only one I knew was late friend Suzanne Humphrey in the middle. Left to Right: Mary Carol Syndenstricker, Virginia Buckland, Suzanne Tolley Humphrey, Ann Neff (who is Tamara’s mother) and Jo Garcia.
I showed this photo to Suzanne not too long after I found it. She loved it and told me countless stories of her school days. Granted we both focused on the history of Pence Springs such as the hotel, Lahey Boarding House, the airport, etc. But anytime we had the excuse to discuss history we didn’t miss a beat.
