CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $183,368 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Legacy Program (VLP) to support the West Virginia Humanities Council.

Through this program, 40 students at Grafton High School in Taylor County and University High School in Monongalia County have begun composing biographies of veterans interred at the Grafton National Cemetery and West Virginia National Cemetery. This program is funded by the VA’s National Cemetery Association (NCA), and will eventually be made permanently available to the public through the West Virginia Humanities Council.

“This program has the unique ability to unite generations of West Virginians,” Senator Capito said. “The funding announced today from the VA will cement the legacy of West Virginia service members through the diligence and study of students who are sharing their stories of service. I am confident that their life stories will inspire the next generation of leaders to continue West Virginia’s long tradition of military service. Following my work on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I am happy to see this program expand and look forward to learning more about the courageous veterans who have been laid to rest at home in West Virginia.”
