WEST ViRGINIA, (DayTripper) – There is a multitude of beautiful places in Southern West Virginia that provide incredible spots to have a picnic. From verdant state parks to gorgeous lakes and incredible valleys, the choices are endless. Here are a few of my favorite places to enjoy a summer picnic.
Little Beaver State Park
Little Beaver State Park is an ideal picnic spot for numerous reasons. Surrounded by lush greenery and serene landscapes, the park offers a perfect setting for a relaxing getaway. The picturesque 18-acre lake serves as a stunning backdrop, providing ample opportunities for fishing, boating, and birdwatching. With numerous places to picnic scattered throughout the park, visitors can easily find a comfortable spot to enjoy their meal. The park also boasts a variety of recreational activities, such as hiking trails, fishing, kayaking, and paddle boating, ensuring a fun-filled day for the entire family.
According to West Virginia State Parks, Little Beaver State Park was established as a day-use park in 1972. However, the area has been in use for anglers and 4-H groups since Little Beaver Creek was dammed in the 1940s, which created the beautiful lake. An upgrade in 2011 added 46 campsites to the park.
Grandview Park
Grandview Park is an idyllic picnic spot for families, friends, and nature enthusiasts alike. The park’s picturesque landscape, with its lush greenery and breathtaking views of the New River Gorge, creates a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and bonding. Its well-maintained picnic areas offer ample space, shaded by towering trees, ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors. The park also boasts a variety of recreational activities, such as hiking, birdwatching, and exploring breathtaking sights, providing entertainment for all ages. Grandview Park’s combination of natural beauty, modern amenities, and diverse activities make it a top choice for memorable picnics.
The area is full of beautiful Catawba rhododendrons. According to the National Park Service, the white great rhododendrons generally bloom in July.
The state of West Virginia purchased 52 acres of land in Grandview to turn into a day-use park in 1939. A picnic area, shelters and roads were erected at this time that remain in use today.
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is an ideal picnic spot for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This picturesque location offers a serene atmosphere, surrounded by lush greenery and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. As a significant Civil War site, the park provides visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the area’s rich history while enjoying a peaceful outdoor experience. The well-maintained grounds offer ample space for families and friends to spread out and relax, while the park’s facilities, including picnic tables and a small playground, make it easy to prepare a delicious meal. Additionally, the park’s numerous walking trails and educational displays make it an engaging destination for people of all ages.
This park is part of the Civil War Discovery Trail. According to West Virginia State Parks, this trail connects “more than 300 historical sites in 16 states.” The park is considered West Virginia’s first state park, having been dedicated in 1928.
Bluestone State Park
Bluestone State Park is another incredible picnic spot. Nestled amidst lush forests and the serene Bluestone River, the park offers a picturesque setting for a relaxing outdoor meal. The well-maintained picnic area is complete with tables and provides a comfortable space to enjoy a meal while taking in the breathtaking views. The park’s abundant recreational opportunities, such as hiking, fishing, and boating, make it a perfect destination for a full day of adventure. Additionally, the diverse wildlife and vibrant flora create a tranquil atmosphere, making Bluestone State Park an ideal location for a memorable picnic experience.
The picnic area is available to rent each year beginning on Memorial Day. Rentals remain available until November 1. Additionally, the marina at Bluestone Lake offers boat rental between April 15 and October 15.
Brooks Falls Roadside Park
Brooks Falls Roadside Park is a fantastic picnic spot. The breathtaking view of the cascading waterfall offers a serene backdrop, perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Surrounded by rock outcroppings and local flora and fauna, this location provides an opportunity to connect with nature while enjoying a meal. The soothing sounds of the flowing water create a calming atmosphere, allowing visitors to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. Additionally, the well-maintained trails and nearby amenities make it easily accessible for all ages. Overall, Brooks Falls Roadside Park is an enchanting destination for a memorable picnic experience.
According to the National Park Service, rather than a waterfall, Brooks Falls is better described as a “runnable, class III rapid.”
Moncove Lake State Park
Moncove Lake State Park, nestled in the picturesque hills of West Virginia, offers an idyllic setting for a memorable picnic experience. The park’s serene atmosphere, with its lush greenery and abundant wildlife, provides a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The lake’s pristine waters invite visitors to engage in recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming, while the surrounding trails offer opportunities for hiking and bird-watching. According to West Virginia State Parks, there are more than 160 different species of birds that can be seen in the area. Overall, Moncove Lake’s natural beauty and diverse amenities make it an ideal picnic spot for all ages.
The park is comprised of 250 acres and has a 500-acre wildlife management area.
