Though many of us often yearn for a visit back into our past, the reality of the fact that you cannot literally go back in time often smashes those happy thoughts. People often say you cannot go back home once you have moved away. I am here to say that for at least one night, 7:30 P.M. January 18, 2022, you can revisit a place that for many of us was the site of so many exciting basketball contests involving all of our schools in Summers County.
Whether you were or are a teacher, basketball player, cheerleader, coach, or a basketball fan you should mark your calendar for a visit back to Perry Memorial Gym on Temple Street in Hinton, WV. All of us old-timers remember Perry Memorial Gym, whether we played for Hinton, Sandstone, Talcott, Forest Hill, Lincoln, or our elementary schools. Bring a friend, a relative, or anybody who wants to support our Lady Bobcat Varsity Basketball team for a home game against Nicholas County High School at Perry Memorial Gym.
Even now I can hear the roar of the crowd from that old gym. You could hear the crowd from blocks away. I can even smell the popcorn that Billy Ray Honaker and so many other volunteers prepared in the concession stand. I can see a gym with standing room only and I remember the faces of so many friends and fans. You will see people you may not have seen in years and there is a special half-time memorial that you do not want to miss!
Steve Tassos and Joe Blankenship are organizing a salute to Perry Memorial Gym and the Hinton High School basketball players who are members of the Hinton High School Bobcat Basketball Hall of Fame. Banners for these players will be hung from the ceiling. The banners will display names, dates they played, and hopefully pictures of these players in their high school uniforms. Also, there will be special plaques placed in the lobby of Summers County High School Gym.
So, can we count on you to once again fill-up the old gym. We members of the Summers County B.O.E. want to hear the rafters raised as we cheer on the kids of Summers County, players and cheerleaders. Let the old meet the young at 7:30 P.M. January 18, 2022.
