Recyclers in Hinton are happy to see recycling start up again, even if it is only for cardboard.
The Summers County Solid Waste Authority posted on Facebook on March 12, “Great news, Summers County! We are able to recycle cardboard. Only cardboard will be accepted at this time. Why is this? With the increase of online ordering, the cardboard box industry was saturated and pricing remained flat. The box plants kept producing and producing. Now, the plants are raising their prices for boxes to match the higher demand. Enter: recycling
It is an industry. It ebbs and flows. For now, take all of your clean, flat cardboard to the camera-monitored bin in Avis.”
Recycling trailers were taken out of service for a year (or longer) because trash and litter were left repeatedly and other guidelines were ignored.
The recycling population of Hinton has been unhappy with the absence of the trailers, and some have been taking their cans, cardboard and plastics to other recycling operations in Ronceverte and Beckley. Mills said the market for recycling dried up, but now says Ronceverte’s solid waste facility has offered to pay a little for cardboard.
To stop littering and dumping at the designated recycling location next to Advance Auto in Avis, Mills said cameras will be used to monitor activity around the trailer.
