There is always a need for first responders in small communities. This is especially true in the midst of a pandemic or other crisis. There are seven fire departments in Summers County, six of them are volunteer departments and one is a paid.
Volunteer departments struggle in the best of times with funding, membership numbers, participation and more. However, working with a fire department is an incredibly rewarding experience. Firefighters help people on a regular basis. Sometimes it is as simple as helping a lost kitty get down from a tree, other times it might be stopping a house fire before it spreads.
Anyone looking for a rewarding way to spend their time in the new year should consider volunteering with one of the six volunteer fire departments in Summers County. Most departments have Facebook pages, websites or emails where more information can be obtained.
