CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing and trying to cash checks from the U.S. mail.

Samantha Miller, 36, of Charleston altered stolen checks and tried to cash them at various banks in Kanawha County, prosecutors said in a news release. She was able to receive several thousand dollars.

Miller admitted cashing an $800 check that did not belong to her in January 2018, while she was caught the following month with several stolen checks taken from the mail, the statement said.

Miller faces up to 35 years in prison and a $1.25 million fine after pleading guilty to bank fraud and possession of stolen mail. Sentencing was set for Jan. 21. Prosecutors said she also will be required to pay restitution to the banks.
