SUMMERS COUNTY W.Va. (Hinton News) – I received this Hinton Bobcats vs. Mr. Hope “Mustangs” Friday, September 30, 1966, Stokes Stadium 8 p.m. advertisement game pamphlet back in the fall. This item was included with Melvin Harris’ collection of Pence Springs documents that his wife, Kay, sent to me. The front of the booklet also says, “We Urge You To Patronize Our Advertisers BE A BOBCAT BOOSTER.”
This was only 60 years ago in a modern sense, but it shows what a different cultural time from then to now we live in. Where everyone had a “sense of community,” this was just one way it was shown at that time. For instance, local football games are traditionally always held on Friday nights. So much so that in the United States, there has become an informal “hierarchy of football” on that day of the week on a local level.
“Friday Nights are traditionally reserved for high school football. For many communities, especially in small towns, these games are major social events, inspiring books and popular TV series, such as “Friday Night Lights.” College football games are held on Saturday nights. NFL games are held on Sunday.
