Summers County Humane Society/ACWP volunteer Martha Braswell receives a grant from the Hinton Area Foundation’s Greg Vandall (left) for $1500 to support K900 field trips to take a van full of dogs to a local park, on a designated day, in the hopes of drawing out new volunteers to come and meet the dogs and give them some exercise. Christina Cochran (right) explained, “It’s hoped these field trips will result in some new volunteers for the humane society, some happy pups, and more community awareness of what we do. The funding will offset the cost of gas to get the dogs back and forth, as well as lunch and other supplies for the volunteers.  There will be future details on this program and when the first dog walks will be."

HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) – According to a criminal complaint, on Oct. 20, a person went to the Summers County Sheriff’s Department and gave officers several photos that showed what appeared to be a laboratory. The individual reportedly said the laboratory was used by Douglas Scott Berkshire for the manufacturing of psychedelic mushrooms and dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

Officers learned that Berkshire lived in Hinton and obtained a search warrant for his residence. When the officers executed the warrant, they did make contact with Berkshire, according to the criminal complaint. Once the officer read Berkshire his Miranda Rights, he allegedly confessed to manufacturing psychedelic mushrooms and dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Berkshire reportedly said both these drugs were currently in his lab. Berkshire also told the officer he had delivered the drugs to his friends, according to the complaint.

The criminal complaint states that Berkshire said there was a small amount of methamphetamine in his house, also. When the officer searched the house, he was allegedly able to find all the items Berkshire confessed to being there. The officer was also reportedly able to find a large drug laboratory that contained several pieces of laboratory equipment and chemicals. The psychedelic mushrooms and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) are both considered Schedule 1 controlled substances.

At the time of writing, Berkshire is in Southern Regional Jail with bail set at $76,000.
