The City of Hinton has planned a tire collection for Wednesday, May 19. The collection will take place on Grace Street beside Gore’s Autobody from 8 AM to 4 PM. There is a limit of 10 tires that will be strictly enforced. All tires must be off of the rim. They will only be accepting passenger car or light truck tires and you will need to have a WV license.
The last tire collection Summers County saw was in 2019. This is usually a once a year effort put on by REAP and the WV Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) but it was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Once the City of Hinton got around to planning their Spring Clean-Up the issue of tires was brought up. The City’s Landmarks Commission AmeriCorps Member, Candice Helms got to planning with the help of Sam Stalnaker, the County’s DEP representative.
Helms told me “Tires pose such a huge problem in communities. Not only are they an eye sore, they catch water increasing mosquitoes, are great habitats for snakes, and they are not something you can just throw away. They have to be disposed of properly. Collections like this help alleviate that pressure, clean up the community, ultimately make it safer, and the service is free. It also helps the improper disposal of tires. Unfortunately, people think it is ok to put them in the river or throw them on the side of the road.
The DEP has been a great organization to work with. With the recent cleanup efforts, they gave the City permission to drop the tires procured at the clean ups in addition to any personal tires the personnel need to drop off separately. They have also given us hundreds of trash bags, litter pickers, and gloves, which has been very helpful.”
Only tires from state residents will be accepted, no businesses.
